Alicia Galarza -Ecuadorian- Canadian
Currently working as a professional mortgage specialist, Alicia Galarza holds a degree in Business Management and a Specialization in Marketing. Parallel to her expertise in the Financial Industry, she had developed a successful marketing career working in some of the most influential multicultural newspapers.
In addition, Alicia is an active member of the Hispanic Community of Toronto and an advocate for social change. She is the current President of “Cono-Ser” -a scholarship program for students of Hispanic origin based at York University- and of the Parent-Child Tutoring Program “Teach to Learn".
She has also demonstrated her leadership skills in her work with organizations within the Hispanic Community in which she served as Member of the Board, as Director of the Association or as Director of Public Relations for the following organizations:
In the year 2003 Alicia came to the realization that one of the ways in which the Hispanic-Canadian Community would acquire greater visibility would be by developing leadership skills among Community members. To achieve these goals Alicia decided to volunteer her services in Radio Voces Latinas as a radio hostess. From the beginning her role was instrumental in the developing of strategic skills to improve the socio-economic conditions of the Community. She worked closely with the Community Services and she provided vision and leadership by hosting a community radio program offering settlement information to newcomers.
In the year 2005 she was hired by San Lorenzo Community Centre (the umbrella organization of Radio Voces Latinas) to work as Marketing Coordinator. Her work led to the recognition by the newspaper Toronto Star that Radio Voces Latinas placed first in the community as the ethnic station with the greatest number of listeners.
In the year 2008 Alicia's exemplary level of services to the Hispanic Community earned her an award from Stanford Who's Who of selected executives, professionals and entrepreneurs from around the world who have demonstrated leadership and achievement.
Alicia's strong spirit and passion is also directed toward humanitarian causes. She volunteer the organization Chimborazo Children's Fund, and The Pink Foundation a community based program created to help the Ecuadorian children's education.
In the year 2009- Alicia contributed to the Ecuadorian Association A.E.O. with the purpose of promoting tourism, culture, and artistic activities in order to showcase the contributions that A.E.O. brings to the growth of the Hispanic community. Alicia was nominated among thirty-four Hispanic-Canadian to participate in the program “The 10 Most Influential".
For the past four years she has volunteered to promote the Festival of Images and Words presented annually by the Cultural Celebration of the Spanish Language (Spanish acronym, CCIE), an association dedicated to show-casing the richness of the literary and artistic production of Hispanic-Canadians.
In the year 2010 Alicia was instrumental in negotiating with Rogers TV to create the television program "Hispanos en Canada", a program designed and produced by a new wave of contemporary Hispanics living in Toronto. The program presents shows dealing with art, music and cultural events aimed at those who appreciate Hispanic culture and it focuses on how the Hispanic Community is an integral part of Toronto's growing diversity. More importantly, it focuses on how individuals can make the City a place in which to foster fun and creativity.” The future speaks Spanglish” is their signature.
Alicia’s dynamic enthusiasm has empowered many individuals and produced tangible results in her volunteer missions within the Hispanic community.
She strongly believes that the joy of working for her own Community can become a powerful force for progress and for a better integration into Canadian Society.
