Skills for change - Trades Win support Program helping internationally Trained Individuals in the Trades
Established in 1982, Skills for Change (SfC) is a non-profit agency providing
learning and training opportunities for immigrants and refugees to access and fully participate in the workplace and wider community.
In April 2008, the Trades Win Support program was launched in partnership with Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning and is funded by the Government of Ontario. The main focus of the Trades Win Support program is to prepare internationally trained Industrial Mechanics (Millwrights), Industrial Electricians and Maintenance/Construction Electricians, Plumbers and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning to write and pass their Certification of Qualification (Red Seal) exam and secure jobs in their fields.
This initiative is one of its kind in the Peel Region and is composed of three modules: Employment Preparation training, Certification of Qualification preparation course (delivered by Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning) and mentoring, placement and job development support.
Our research and consultation indicates that Skills for Change makes a difference in Peel Region, which is the GTA’s fastest-growing municipality. One out of every 25 immigrants arriving in Canada come to Peel Region, and it is home to more than 380,500 immigrants1. In addition, our research and community consultations confirm that there is a deep need for bridging programs that quickly fill the gaps that stand between people with international education and experience and employment or entrepreneurship.
SfC also offers various programs and services such as skills upgrading (Excel, Word etc.), language upgrading (ESL, LINC, ELT) and sector specific employment preparation programs (trades, engineers etc.)
